Are You Looking For A Spanish Therapist Who Speaks Your Language And Understands Your Culture?
Have you struggled to find a therapist whom you feel truly “gets” you and your cultural background? Do you want someone who:
Can balance mental health needs with cultural values and traditions?
Understands loss of identity, fear of deportation, and other immigration experiences?
Knows how to navigate between American and Spanish culture seamlessly?
In the past, maybe you had therapists who were either exclusively Spanish-speaking or English-speaking, but you found that both were unable to fully understand you. Perhaps you’ve had translators in therapy to help you, but all that did was create a gap in communication and make it hard for you to build rapport with your therapist.
Deep down, you want nothing more than to have a counselor who holds the best of both worlds and understands your multicultural heritage.
You Want To Feel Empowered, But You Don’t Want To Give Up Your Cultural Roots
Let’s face it: there are certain aspects of Hispanic culture that many American therapists may not get. You may have a stronger loyalty to family than most Americans do, and your obligations to others may present differently. Additionally, there may be elements of the immigration journey that are specific to your cultural background, such as fearing for your citizenship and dealing with the loss of identity or community.
Additionally, there could be intergenerational trauma that’s woven into your family line, and you’re hoping that a Spanish therapist can help you process and resolve your emotional wounds so that you can live a more empowered life.
If this is the case, then you’ve come to the right place. As a bilingual therapist who was born in a Spanish-speaking country, I’m confident that I can relate to your experiences on a deeper level and help you increase your resilience through the power of my compassionate, culturally-sensitive approach to therapy.

Many Spanish Speakers Struggle To Access Mental Health Care
If you’re a native Spanish speaker who’s having a hard time finding a counselor, you’re not alone. Many Hispanic people face systemic barriers to getting the care they need. There’s often a lack of professionals who speak their native language and understand their culture.
Additionally, the medical and mental health system here in the US is often patronizing to Hispanics, ignoring their heritage, discarding their immigration experiences, and outright discriminating against them.
On top of that, there’s a very real tendency within traditional Spanish cultures to dismiss therapy and portray it as a form of betrayal, weakness, or shame. Spanish-speaking cultures in general often value “being strong and sucking it up” and see mental health issues as an individual failure.
The truth is just the opposite: mental health issues can happen to anyone, regardless of how strong or resilient we are. At one point or another, all of us will suffer from trauma, loss, illness, and other forms of hardship. That’s why therapy is so vital—it’s a chance to think out loud about our emotional challenges and better understand our needs, goals, and values. Just as our physical health needs attention and care, so does our mental health.
Therapy Can Empower Spanish Speakers To Craft Legacies Of Healing
I was born and raised in a Spanish-speaking country and I immigrated here to the US, so I understand both Hispanic culture and the immigration experience from the inside out. I have great respect for Hispanic culture, yet I also know the challenges it can pose to younger generations, as well as the losses and sacrifices that often go hand in hand with immigration.
As a therapist, my goal is to help you learn to prioritize your individual needs and values while still honoring your family and culture. It is possible to achieve independence without drastically altering your relationships or breaking things off with your family. I’m here to help you bridge the gap between two different worlds, whatever that may look like for you!
What To Expect In Spanish Therapy Sessions
If you’re new to therapy, I’ll spend the beginning of our time together normalizing mental health care and explaining what a therapist does. I’ll help you understand that therapy is a normal avenue of self-care, not something for “crazy” people. I’ll also break down the confidentiality of sessions, ensuring that what you say remains with me and won’t be part of the gossip mill that’s often present in tight-knit Hispanic families.
Regardless of your level of therapeutic experience, you and I can explore:
Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues
Familial and social clashes that affect your day-to-day life
Unhealthy patterns or behaviors related to intergenerational trauma
The push and pull of different cultures on your identity
Immigration challenges regarding safety, citizenship, and breaches with family members
Since I am bilingual, I offer counseling sessions in both English and Spanish. With many of my bilingual clients, I incorporate both languages into our work together—it all depends on what your needs are!
Tailoring My Approach To Spanish Counseling Sessions
The most important aspect of therapy for Spanish speakers is framing the approaches I use within a cultural context that’s appropriate for the client. Depending on what we work on together, I may draw from interventions such as:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
Trauma-Informed Therapy to discuss migration hardships, child abuse, domestic violence, and other painful experiences in your past
Effective Communication Skills Training to help you reframe culturally-accepted forms of communication that may be unhealthy or maladaptive
Narrative Therapy that aligns with the storytelling of Hispanic culture, helping you externalize your issues and honor your story of survival and resilience.
In the end, my mission is to help you create an identity that’s at once confident and empowering while still holding true to your roots. You can live a healthy, happy life without sacrificing one culture for the other, and you can also address your mental health without bringing shame to your family or loved ones. I’m here to show you how!
You May Have Some Questions About Therapy In Spanish…
How does therapy in Spanish work?
Therapy is a confidential and safe space where you can speak freely about what you are experiencing, at your own pace. During sessions, we’ll explore your thoughts, emotions, experiences, and relationships to better understand what is affecting you and why.
As we work together, I’ll accompany you with empathy, clarity, and respect. I’ll help you strengthen your inner resources, make more conscious decisions, and build changes that feel authentic and sustainable for you.
Are you going to tell me to go against my culture?
No, I won’t. Therapy does not force—it encourages, invites, and proposes. Sometimes, that means challenging cultural standards and reflecting on whether your culture’s values align with yours, but it never means disregarding your heritage. Together, we’ll find a way to do the healing work of therapy within your range of emotional comfort, balancing your need for individuality with your love of family and culture.
What if I feel that therapy is not for me or we’re not a good fit?
If this happens, we can talk about it openly in session. Sometimes adjusting the approach, the pace, or the goals can make a significant difference. The good news is that as the client, you have full control over those elements of therapy—I’m simply here to help you reach your own objectives on your own terms.
If you still feel that this is not the space you need, you have every right to seek another therapist who feels like a better fit for you. After all, therapy should be a place where you feel safe being yourself—your well-being always comes first!
You Deserve Therapy That Is Compassionate And Culturally-Sensitive
