Welcome to My Practice
In my approach to therapy, your story is at the heart of our work. I pay close attention to the words you use to describe your emotional experiences, relationships, challenges, goals, and dreams. This helps us uncover emotional 'knots' or obstacles that contribute to mental health struggles.
Using a holistic framework, I work with you to explore and challenge unhelpful perceptions, validate and process difficult emotions, and develop personalized strategies that align with your strengths, history, and present circumstances. I use concepts and tools from Solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral approaches, and humanistic theory, as well as effective communication skills.
My areas of expertise include childhood trauma recovery, identification and healing from unhealthy narcissistic relationships, comprehension of grief and loss in its many forms, management of life transitions, and the development of healthy coping mechanisms for complex emotions such as anger, fear, and shame.
As a body-aware practitioner, I also help you recognize the deep connection between your physical and emotional experiences, fostering a more integrated understanding of yourself and your potential for healing.
I am a bicultural professional with extensive experience working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds at different stages of adaptation to new environments. I speak Spanish fluently. Currently, I am providing services mainly through a HIPPA-approved virtual platform. I have found that telehealth makes mental health services accessible, private, and as safe as face-to-face services.
Paulina Ospina-Mallarino, LCSW
I’m a licensed psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience supporting individuals through life’s complex emotional challenges. My training is in both Clinical Social Work and Public Health, and my approach is rooted in a deep respect for how our personal histories, identities, and environments shape our mental health.
I’ve lived and worked in Colombia, Canada, and California, and I’m fully bilingual and bicultural. This lived experience has given me a deep appreciation for the richness—and sometimes the challenges—of navigating different cultural norms and expectations, especially when it comes to emotional well-being and our ability to function and feel fulfilled.
Clients describe me as direct, compassionate, and able to bring humor into even the most difficult conversations. I believe in honest dialogue, in showing up as a real person, and in the healing power of creativity. I also believe that each of us is born with a unique talent, and that nurturing our creative energy—however it shows up—is essential to well-being.
Outside of sessions, I write regularly, which deepens my understanding of the human experience and enriches my work with clients. I also enjoy hiking, finding meaning in simple adventures, watching movies, and spending time with my family.
Whether you’re navigating anxiety, grief, depression, a life transition, or feeling stuck, my goal is to offer a space that is thoughtful, supportive, and real. Therapy doesn’t have to be mysterious or intimidating—it’s a conversation, and a place to reconnect with the strength and wisdom you already carry inside.
